What's going on.

With summer winding down and school approaching, I thought it was time for a Park District update. I will try to do a quarterly newsletter in the Echo, and online to keep you all informed.

News and Notes
  • Children under 18 may only swim during open swim, when a lifeguard is on duty.
  • Adults may swim at anytime, as long as they are not alone.
  • Clicking on an event in either calendar will give more information about the selected event.
  • A Note From Tommy Barton, Executive Director

Welcome to the Prophetstown Park District website, the latest addition to the park district in order to better serve our community. Prophetstown Park District was established in 1966.

The community of Prophetstown sits along the Rock River and the town leaders wanted a place for children to learn to swim, so the park district was organized and the Prophetstown Pool was built. For 34 years it was just that, a beautiful indoor/outdoor pool that was open all summer and weekends in the winter.

In 2000 the Board of Commissioners were faced with the task of either closing the pool or expanding the Park District’s role in the community in order to keep the swimming pool open. They chose the latter and with grants and donations built the Prophetstown Rec Center. The pool remained open and a gym, kitchen, and weight room were added on. In the 10 years since the Park District has expanded its hours and is now open year round and has become the meeting place for the community. We have added youth, adult, and senior programs. We have also rehabilitated a playground and baseball fields in the Prophetstown/Lyndon area.

As director I am often complimented and asked how a town of our size can have and maintain such a nice facility. My answer is always the same, a dedicated staff and a community that takes pride and ownership in its people. Thanks to the people of Prophetstown the Park District has become a multi-community destination for the young and old and with the vision of the Board of Commissioners we will keep growing and finding ways to serve our community.
